How I Teach Acting

My approach is rooted in the work of actor and teacher Michael Chekhov, whose techniques place imagination, movement and atmosphere at the centre of performance.
In lessons, these ideas are explored through clear, practical exercises designed to help students move beyond simply 'pretending' or 'willing' a character and begin experiencing the character physically and imaginatively. We may explore gesture, movement, atmosphere, character qualities, objectives and the relationship between inner experience and outward expression.
The aim is not to impose one correct way of acting, but to give each student practical tools through which they can become freer, more expressive and increasingly independent as a performer.
What We Work On
Imagination and Character
Movement and Physical Expression
Developing the imagination to discover character, circumstances and a richer inner life on stage.
Exploring movement, gesture and physical qualities to help characters become expressive, embodied and alive.
Voice and Text
Scene Work and Relationships
Exploring language, rhythm and vocal expression to communicate text with clarity, intention and emotional life.
Working practically with scenes to develop objectives, responsiveness and a truthful connection with other characters.
Presence and Confidence
Developing greater freedom, focus and confidence on stage, with the ability to engage fully with a scene and an audience.
Auditions and Performance
Applying the work to monologues, auditions and performances, with focused preparation tailored to the individual student.
Who Acting Lessons Are For
Acting lessons are individually tailored, so students do not need to arrive with extensive previous experience. The work can be adapted to the student's age, confidence, interests and goals.

Experience Behind the Teaching
My teaching is informed by my own practical experience as an actor for over 15 years, working across classical and contemporary theatre and developing a range of roles through movement, imagination, text and ensemble work.
This experience allows lessons to remain grounded in the realities of performance: making clear choices, responding truthfully in the moment to other actors and bringing a character fully to life in front of an audience.
